Flee From Youthful Lust

I want to use this post to speak very openly and honestly about the dangers of pornography, how it leads to destruction, and separates us from God.

There has been so many times in my youth and adult life when I thought, “It’s just a quick video, and it’s better than cheating in real life.” What a disastrous mind and heart set that was. I can tell you from my experience it never ends that way. It quickly turns into addiction, and those quick feelings of satisfaction turn into deep holes of loneliness and desire for real intimacy. The further a man allows that into his life the easier it is to feel okay with cheating on girlfriends, or their wife, and absolutely turning away from God. The reason I say this is true, is because it was my life for the last 25 years.

In 2 Timothy 2:22 Paul wrote, “Flee also youthful lust, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” In this passage, the Word isn’t just telling us not to do it, but to flee from it! The Greek transliteration of the word “flee” that we read is from pheugō (pronounced fyoo’-go). It’s a Greek verb meaning to flee away, seek safety by flight, or to seek safety from danger. It is an absolute. It is a warning. It reminds me of any dramatic scene in a show or movie, when the main character is using extreme measures to run from an apparent danger.

God knows the value of our hearts, and the beauty of our minds. He constructed them. He knows the inner workings of them for each of us. Beyond that, He knows how he made them to worship and glorify Him. Paul told us to flee from that youthful lust because of the poison it causes our hearts and minds, ultimately separating both from God.

Unfortunately, our society has normalized sexual content and destructive habits in young men to the point that many men like myself felt “normal” in our sinful behavior. It is my prayer today that this hold our society and Satan has had on the old men, young men, and boys in our world is loosened. That more and more come to know the love and truth of Jesus, and how he constructed us for marriage to one woman, to raise families, and to use our minds and bodies to glorify Him in ALL THINGS.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
